Primary Enhanced Resource Provision

Primary Enhanced Resource Provision

An Enhanced Resource Provision (ERP) is an additionally resourced special educational service within a mainstream primary school. ERPs specialise in specific areas of need.

In York, there are primary ERPs for Specific Learning Difficulties and Communication and Interaction.

Read more about:

Haxby Road ERP is a specialist provision for children who require a curriculum which centres on social communication and interaction, to thrive. Children are taught in small groups by specialist teachers with positive social interaction modelled between peers and a communication and interaction focus to all lessons, tasks and activities. All staff support their verbal communication with visuals and sign.

There are 26 places in the ERP split over 2 sites: Haxby Road School and Lakeside School, with children moving between the classes and sites. There are 15 dual registered places for children who attend the ERP in the morning and then return to their class in their home school for the afternoon, and 11 full time places. Those children with a full-time place are working towards full access to the mainstream classes on site (with specialist support) for the afternoon sessions and are on the roll of Haxby Road Primary Academy.

All children in the ERP have a primary need of Communication and Interaction (with and without a diagnosis of autism). For full time places, children must have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). For part time places, children should have an EHCP or be supported at SEN support. They will be working at National Curriculum levels similar to that of their peers The model of enhanced support provided by the ERP is centred on a commitment to the SCERTS approach (a focus on social communication with a variety of conversation partners) and is a small group model, not one-to-one. Subsequently, the provision is not suitable for children requiring one-to-one support or those who find it impossible to tolerate working within a small group. The majority of children supported by the ERP are expected to remain within mainstream education in the secondary phase.

The ERP achieved the Centre of Excellence accreditation from Scheme for Schools in March 2018. The accreditation recognised the ERP’s success in supporting children with speech, language and communication needs and their families. Teachers in the ERP have or are working towards post graduate degrees in either Autism or Language and Communication Impairment in Children. All staff are SCERTS trained, and TAs have the ELKLAN qualification.

From 24 September St Oswald's ERP will become a more targeted provision for children in Year 3 and Year 4. Aiming to:

  • narrow the attainment gap in literacy and numeracy and develop more confidence in reading and independent learning skills for children
  • increase the skill-set and knowledge of teachers and TAs in settings.

There are 10 dual registered places with children attending the enhanced resource for morning sessions Tuesday to Friday. Mondays will be an outreach morning from the ERP to home settings (6 visits per year). This intervention is fixed to three terms with three clear, agreed outcomes of progress.

Children are taught in a group of ten with an intensive curriculum designed and delivered by a specialist teacher with a curriculum focus of literacy and numeracy.

Staff use a highly structured, multi-sensory approach to teaching and learning and the children are also expected to be developing their ability to work independently.

Bespoke programmes will be developed dependent on identified area of development, with overlearning a key element of the approach and including some work at home to embed learning.

Children will need to be able to manage the challenges a dual registered place can bring and the nature of the delivery is unsuitable for children who require 1:1 for Communication and Interaction and/or SEMH needs or for those who learn best in learning environments away from peers.

Home schools are equal partners in the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum and are responsible for embedding the successful strategies from the ERP.

This is a provision for children with My Support Plan or EHCP and with an identified agreed primary need from within the broader cognition and learning descriptor.

Children will have a gap in learning in literacy and/or numeracy; likely to be working 2-3 years behind ARE, not passed phonics screener and/or with standard scores of below 75.

There are three points of entry:

  • October half term - year 4
  • February half term - year 3 and year 4
  • May half term - year 3
